Easy Knitting Stitch: Estonian Button Stitch

It’s not a coincidence that we’ve been gravitating a bit more around lighter and brighter colors lately: spring is getting closer! 🌷 And we are so ready to get in the mood of cottons, light pullovers and t-shirts with the Estonian Button Stitch, a super delicate knitting stitch.

This stitch is also very easy to work with: the foundation stitch is the Stocking Stitch, a knitting staple. The little buttons are made by wrapping the working yarn around groups of three stitches. By following this pattern, the little knots will alternate on diagonal lines.

Compared to the Bobble Stitch, the Wrapped Stitch looks definitely flatter and smoother which gives an overall softer and less extravagant look to your piece. If you’re not a big fan of bobbles, this could be a valid alternative for you!

Note: for this stitch, you will need a cable needle. If you don’t have it, you can use a large sewing needle, a crochet hook the same size as your knitting needles, or even a pencil!

Estonian Button Stitch Tutorial

Cast on a multiple of 6 + 2 stitches.

Row #1 and following odd rows [WS = wrong side]:

Purl rows.

Row #2 [RS = right side]:
  • Knit 1 stitch, *knit 3 stitches, wrap 3 stitches (knit 3 stitches, move them onto a cable needle, then wrap the yarn around them 4 times, move the 3 wrapped stitches back onto the right needle)*.
  • Repeat from * to * until you have 1 stitch left on the needle, then knit 1 stitch.
Rows #4 and #8:

Knit rows.

Row #6:
  • Knit 1 stitch, *wrap 3 stitches, knit 3 stitches*.
  • Repeat from * to * until you have 1 stitch left on the needle, then knit 1 stitch.

Continue repeating Rows 1 – 8.

Estonian Button Stitch Chart

The Estonian Button Knitting Stitch Chart is an easy level chart for those who already know the knitting basics. This chart consists of 8 rows to repeat until desired length. This stitch is made on a multiple of 6 + 2 stitches.
