UPrato, creativity and active participation in the city
UPrato is a community participation project that combines two important local strengths – yarn and people – to communicate a message of positivity, creative energy, and diversity.
UPrato is a series of knitting-related events will lead up to the creation of an artistic installation by the artist Beatrice Gallori, which will be displayed on the façade of Palazzo Pretorio from June 17-18 and then in the courtyard of the ex fabbrica Campolmi in Prato until July 31. The event is or organized by the Museo del Tessuto and BettaKnit with the patronage of the Provincia di Prato and Comune di Prato.
The event is inserted into two major worldwide celebrations of knitting, but has been interpreted and organized on a local level. Worldwide Knit in Public Day (June 9-17, www.wwkipday.com) and International Yarnbombing Day (June 9). UPrato combines both these worldwide events with a knitting in public event on June 9 in the Giardino Buonamici and an authorized yarnbombing of Palazzo Pretorio in Prato on June 17. The work will remain on display until June 18 and then moved to the courtyard at the Museo del Tessuto (ex Campolmi) where it will remain through Prato Estate, July 31 2012.
Starting from the multicoloured knit squares made by local companies as well as individuals, the installation created by the artist Beatrice Gallori represents the city’s multicultural nature united in a desire to innovate and encourage a rebirth in the city.
This collective street art requires the participation of many individuals and institutions. The Provincia di Prato and Comune di Prato have both provided locations and logistical support for UPrato; the Museo del Tessuto is a valuable partner, and the Consorzio Promozione Filati di Prato has generously provided yarn donated by many producers in the territory of Prato. The artist Beatrice Gallori donated her time and creative energy to design and assemble the banner. Flod is the creative agency behind the graphics and promotion of the project. Finally, each and every person or family who makes a part of the UPrato banner equally important, since it is they who make this city what it is.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE
Participants can pick up a free UPrato kit at a distribution point from May 28 to June 13. The kit contains yarn and instructions to make a 20×20 or 10x10cm square, and other UPrato material. The square should be dropped off before June 13 at the same distribution points. Knitters are also invited to participate in the Knitting in Public event in Giardino Buonamici on June 9, where staff will be on hand to distribute and explain how to use the kits! All those involved will be rewarded with a free and exclusive tour of Palazzo Pretorio (closed for restoration since 1998) at 5pm on June 17.
